Mittens

It's not an elaborate, we'll though-out political cartoon, but I wanted to contribute. I did sketch this on the outside of my mail-in ballot envelope (not the one that you send in to vote, however), so that should make it extra political or something.

Thanks to Kevin Gentilcore for the inspiration.

BOND: Baron Samedi

Uh, better late than never right? So I chose an oddball for this series... ol' Baron Samedi aka The Man Who Cannot Die! from Live and Let Die. Probably one of Bond's goofier adventures, and that's saying something about these movies. I almost did Christopher Walken from A View to a Kill. But the Baron was more fun!

Hail to the Dark Lord...

I am not much into politics lol.  I follow it casually because really there is no avoiding it during election season.  However, every election cycle I always like to get a campaign bumper sticker that shows my support for some candidate.  Last time I went for the "Vote Cthulhu:  Why choose the lesser of two evils?" stick and this year I decided on the classy "Vote for Satan." You should see the looks I get driving around town.  So with that in mind I decided to pay homage to my campaign sticker and ripped off the Obama Hope poster and tried to add that feel of those political cartoons, with all of their cross hatching and use of black.  They have a very distinct look.  Not sure how well I captured it but it was fun nonetheless.  Here is to the end of this election season!

I know that this is off-topic, but I recall folks talking about sharing their 24 hour comics here.  Here's mine!

Darkseid

I will post a scan when I get one. Here's my Darkseid complete with Kirby Krackle

Darkseid!

Here's my entry, a bit late. Last week was crazy busy, especially ending with my 24 Hour Comic Day attempt.

But here's to the King; the TRUE creative force behind most of our childhood favorites. This drawing is from my sketchbook.

Cheers
Patrick

//Destroyer Duck

While it seems like everyone else went with some more recognizable characters, I went with Destroyer Duck...King Kirby did the art for this book that was written by Steve Gerber who, at the time, was going through copyright issues with Marvel over another fowl-mouthed character Howard the Duck...I realize that if that explosion is actually behind him, the right side should have the thicker border of ink...and I'm sad that I couldn't figure out a way to throw the "Kirby Krackle" in there somehow...

Surfin' the Void

Did this quickly yesterday at the Dallas Fan Days show. The Silver Surfer was my favorite comic book character as a kid. He was a character that I could really relate to and care about. Still do , I guess.

Here he is ... "Surfin' the Void" ink on 8"x10" illustration board by Robert Elrod.

Highfather

Yeah I don't know much about Jack Kirby so google was my friend on this one. I did however love reading all of the descriptions of these characters. I knew a bit about his Marvel work but absolutely nothing about his D.C. work so I ended up picking Highfather. His description was pretty awesome so I ran with him. I liked this weeks pick so I hope there is a run on entries this weekend.

The Demon...

Gentlemen!  I cannot believe I am the first to post for such an awesome topic lol!

Recently I did some sketch cards for the New DC 52.  It was awesome working on the set but I wish I could have drawn them in their classic costumes as well as the new 52 ones.  The one character I wished that the most for was Etrigan The Demon.  What a great character and full on Kirby!  It was a while into my comic collecting and nerd training before I learned that Kirby creator not just for Marvel but for DC as well.  There is still tons of his DC work I haven't read yet but The Demon is one of my favorites.

//Strange Occupation

Oddly enough, no one else picked this guy?  I struggled with the background.  I wanted to impress upon the fact that this guy is larger than life and has this intensity about him.

G O L D E N E Y E r e d u x

I’m not really a big Bond fan. I remember I had to take my younger brother to Goldeneye when it came out because he was really into those movies. The only Bond I knew was the Timothy Dalton  and the movies in the 80’s so I wasn’t really blown away by those. So this was the reboot or whatever and I wasn’t expecting much, but I did really like Goldeneye. So I was kind of excited that they were going to do new movies, but then the next one stunk so I figured it was all down hill from there. Anyhow I just did a little Goldeneye sketch jam, as a sort of revision or reboot.

003 1/2

This drawing was inspired by my lovely girlfriend.  She has never once seen a James Bond movie but she watched the hell out of the James Bond Jr. cartoon.

I have vague memories of this show.  I remember him skiing a lot and he had similar but more comic booky villains.  But just look at him!  Mullet!  Jeans tucked into his awesome Jordans.  A members only jacket!  The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I was actually surprised to find out that he was based on a book called The Adventures of James Bond Jr. 003 1/2.  Crazy.  I am surprised this hasn't come up more often, I mean how many women has 007 slept with?  Like a million.  Oh he probably has some sort of super secret spy gadget that Q made for him to prevent this from happening.  Can you imagine that scene in a movie?  "Mr. Bond, here is your watch laser capable of cutting through diamonds, your exploding pen and your baby killing death ray.  Bang Bang.  I sense I have gone to far... enjoy!

Scaramanga!

My choice...The Man with the Golden Gun: Francisco Scaramanga! I thought about Jaws, and Odd Job, and even Dr. No...but hey...it's Christopher Lee.

I didn't have a ton of time to commit to the draw blog this week, but I wanted to at least get a sketch out here. Hope you enjoy.

007

Thanks so much for the invite you guys!  This is the first piece I've done using a new (or at least new to me) iPad App called Procreate!  Its one of those apps that you just love from day-1.  That aside, I've been feeling a bit cold lately ;)... See you guys in a few!  Peace-

//2100

I took a different approach--instead opting to go with the Lone Wolf 2100 version of this classic storyline. A mix of sci-fi and samurai storytelling, this version of Lone Wolf features a female "cub" named Daisy and her protector Itto who holds a fascinating secret. Francisco Ruiz Velasco did a fantastic job of bringing this futuristic, but horribly ruined world to life. If you haven't read this series, I'd look it up in TPB format and highly recommend it.

This piece pretty much just fell out of my head and onto the page through my pencil.  I did it in blue pencil again, but tweaked it to the red in Photoshop.  There's some discrepancies with it, but overall I think it's a successful piece.

Me, before and after

This isn't new, so I hope that's not against the rules.

M e h

At the Dry Dock with my end of the night "one for the road" growler. I got a ride so no worries! lol
That's Rob Elrod on the left and Keven Gentilcore on the right. Can't wait to grab some brews and scare away tables with the Timbeline crew again :D

Like a Viking!

Yeah, I made myself a viking.  What of it!?  LOL.  I just really wanted to draw a viking again.  Truth be told I would be the worst viking ever.  Nothing would ever get pillaged.  All the other vikings would be like "Hey jerk, were going pillaging" and I would just sit there and smoke and say "I'll catch up."  Vikings wouldn't have stood for this that shit and I would have had a "Bloody Eagle" or whatever it is called where they ripped peoples rib cages open and splayed them apart like wings.  Awesome.  Anywo, for comparisons sake:

Spina Self Portrait

"That Which Wears My Face"

Self portraits. Gah! I don't like talking about myself and I don't enjoy doing self portraits either. (I also don't like green eyes and ham!) This is my first in about 9 years, I think. The last one was for an anthology (to accompany a story I was having published). This one I think I like better. Anyway, here it is.

"That Which Wears My Face" ... colored pencil on 9"x12" cradled wood panel by Robert Elrod.

For more of my artwork, please visit www.robertelrodllc.com. To check out my webcomic, please visit www.hellbound-comic.com. Thanks!

Don't you forget it.

I can't draw myself unless I'm in a space suit or something equally goofy that's space related. Sci fi nerdo!

Father and Son, they stood again in Meifumado... The Way of the Warrior.

So it figures my week and I'm late again! Anyways - yeah I LOVE Lone Wolf and Cub! I feel like the odd man out here - I've read & own all 28 (!) volumes of the manga, the sequel and seen all the movies. I'm a self professed samurai genre junkie. So here's my entry for this week! It gave me a chance to study Kojima's brush style and I had a lot of fun with it. Even if the book is a down right noir filled path to hell. Hope you guys dig it!

Am I creepy? Yes I am!

Uhh, yeah.  This is what happens when I draw what I love. ;)  Reference photo after the break.

Am I evil? Yes I am...

So I had just finished this on Sunday...a couple hours before Andrew sent in the topic. So I'm using it!! I started it last week so I could update my old portrait on my personal draw blog, and I think it turned out well. Still working on the coloring thing.

This was inspired by the fact that when I was in middle school, a bunch of self-righteous christian nut-bars, said that I was evil, and drawing evil things, and had a mural that I and a bunch of other kids drew on the art class wall white-washed. So now they can say they were right. Hail to the Dark Lord!

Whatever. Loons. I guess I should say that this is also inspired by my love of metal. \m/

Cheers

Lone Wolf & Cub

I had never heard of this until it was chosen as a topic and I had no time to do any real research on it.
