Lone Wolf Jam

I don’t know all that much about “Lone Wolf and Cub” and that makes me kind of sad. It looks pretty cool! I do remember being show a scene of it in High School for my Japanese class though.  I guess the main protagonist's family is killed except for his infant son. He puts a ball and a sword on the floor and tells his son to choose between the two. If he chose the ball, the father would kill him and send him to heaven to be with his mother. If he chose the sword he would live and become Ronin like his father. The child briefly walks towards the ball first and the father almost draws his sword to cut him down, but then the baby chooses the sword. Friggen crazy! LOL

Anyhow this is my entry for this week. Like I said I don’t know much about the series so I did a sketch jam with a non-sequitur montage motif using the panels from the manga that I found.

I love LW&C, though my exposure was only to the first volume of the manga, put out by Dark Horse. I also read it late, and it's hard to come by the later volumes. But it's amazing. If you haven't read it, try and track it down.

Wolfy and Pup

I have to admit I only have a passing knowledge of Lone Wolf and Cub.  I have seen a couple of the movies and I enjoyed them but it was a while ago.  I read one of the books and put it on that list of "things I need to read more of"... but never did.

Anywho, I don't get to draw this sort of thing very often and it was a blast.

On a side note, I opened a new package of backing boards (that is what I do most of these on) and I don't know what is up with them but they like absorbed the led and didn't want to hang on to the ink.  Granted, these are not made for drawing on but what the eff?

Another thing I feel guilty about is not coming up with an amusing title for this. I'd love to hear your suggestions. Here, I'll start with ... "Who Run Japantown?". And ... go!

I don't think I have ever drawn a He-Man character, even when I was a kid. I loved the show and watched it all the time but still, I have no recollection of ever once drawing one of the characters which is kind of weird.

A couple of years ago I was driving home from my job and stopped by Wal Mart to pick up a movie (I was a bouncer so this was like at 2am in the morning), and in the $5 bin I found a dvd collection of the "10 best episodes of He-Man". So I bought that shit because I hadn't seen the show since the 80's and I remembered loving the show so I was all ready to marathon and watch some episodes. I got through 10 mins of the first episode and turned it off. Just could not deal! lol I have come close to putting the dvd in for this week to watch an episode or two for reference but it's still just sitting on my desk.

Merman, Dad. Merman!

I was looking at some of the old action figures and chose to do Merman. I never watched He-Man, so I had no reference for characterization. I hope this does him justice.

Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle Yeah!

This blog has me occasionally drawing things that I had really never expected to draw. This week is one of those weeks. I remember the show being on when I was much younger. No. I never did watch it. The closest I've come to watching it was a music video that featured clips from the show to a pretty funny song. Anyway, here's an ink drawing of the title character from "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe". Hope you enjoy it.

Ok- so the Pencils are mine from about a month ago- I am working on a cartoon villain project and he was the first one done. sorry for cheating on this one, but he was already done and I am neck deep in two card sets and AP's from a third.

The Stinkor!

Just like Patrick I was all about He-Man as a kid.  I had so many of those damn figures.  I hade castle Greyskull, the tigers, the works!  I even had this crazy Skeletor whose chest would flip to show different types of battle damage.  When I was looking through the internets there was one figure I remember all to clearly...Stinkor.  Man that toy stunk!  Leave it to Mattel to sell a toy thats special feature was to stink!  Come to think of it Moss Man was pretty rank too, though I am not sure that was intended.

Any wizzle, who would hang out with Stinkor?  I mean right up front he is advertising he stinks.  I bet he is lonely...

Witchy Woman!

Scott Springer mentioned she looked like Clea from Doctor Strange - not consciously going for that but shoot she looks good as a Clea too!

Ol' Skullface

Alright. Here's hoping this will inspire the Timberline guys to post up some Masters art. I thought that this might be a less than popular topic, but I went for it anyways. MOTU was a huge part of my childhood, and I still love it to this day. Sure it was ridiculous, and now synical grown-ups can look back at the cartoon as being homo-erotic...but I remember He-Man as one of my first super heroes. There wasn't anything he couldn't accomplish. Literaly the MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE UNIVERSE. I still get chills when I hear that Filmation jingle, and then the most awesome theme song ever. For me, as a kid...it was empowering. Probably the same reason I listen to heavy metal music as an adult.

If there was one thing I always regreted, was that they ended up making Skeletor and his minions a bunch of jerks. They got dumber and dumber each season...each episode even. So here's my tribute to evil...when I played with my action figures, these guys were always badass. Enjoy.

I got interested

Living Dead Girl

I don't typically do pinup style art. I'm not sure that everyone would agree that this falls into that category but I'm going to go ahead and say it does. Hope you enjoy it.

BTW, I looked at a bunch of Gil Elvgren pieces before starting this. There is a specific painting of his that I took extra notice of when doing this. I don't know if I would tall this an homage but I enjoy and respect Elvgren's work quite a lot.

Greaser Pin Up Girl

Man this one through me for a loop.  As you may have noticed I don't do many pinups.  I was having a hard time coming up with something to do for this so I present to you, before anybody else, a new and upcoming character from the pages of Teenage Love Zombies.  I know I know but Patrick did it first!  Anywho, I looked at tons of pinups for reference and tons of greasers and for a second I wish I had cooler hair. Sa la vie.

I really need to read things a little closer some days. I just locked onto “sex object” and “pin-up” and was just off to the races. This is just a pin-up with my spin on it so I guess it kind of fits. Maybe I’ll do another post as I have plenty of time.

I made a papercraft cube of the Frank Lloyd Wright Ennis House tiles used for Deckard's apartment in Blade Runner.

I finally got around to being able to do some of these! Rock on! So here's Pris from Blade Runner. I tried to get as minimal as I could with this as a challenge.

My Triumphant Return to Timberline! ...cricket, cricket...

Today's Blade Runner piece has seriously been the first drawing/painting I've done for myself in three weeks. I apologize for my long absence, just had too much stuff on my plate, much of which wasn't even art related. After three weeks though, it felt friggen fantastic to do something that was just fun and free. I started out today by sketching out Sean Young's character Rachael. As I brought the sketch to a finish, it occurred to me that it looked like an old Victorian portrait. I thought this was interesting since Blade Runner takes place in the future. But relationships like that interest the shit out of me so I went for it. Did a sketch of Deckard too, painted both in PS and used a stock image of a fancy frame I found online to finish them off. All told about 3 and half hours of work. It went fast, but it always does when you're enjoying yourself.

Another great choice this week. I'm also a huge fan of Blade Runner, and of Ridley Scott in general. So many cool characters to choose from, and so many iconic visual moments...it was hard to choose. But I went with Edward James Olmos' character, Gaff. He barely says anything in the flick, but he has a defining line at the end; the title of this post. He's got those crazy blue eyes, and the origami he leaves everywhere...

So here you go. Excellent choice, Kevin!

Tears in the rain...

It took me all week to decide on what do draw for this topic. I kept going back and forth between all the characters but finally landed on Batty. The was only one way for me to draw him and that is from his classic death scene (SPOILERS JERKS).

The first time I saw this movie was with Harrison Ford's narration on TV. Every other time I saw it since was the director's cut we are all so familiar with. I thought I was crazy, that maybe I dreamed it, but behold the power of DVD! I kind of tend to prefer the director's cut all though I do like the narration except for this scene it kind of kills the moment. Anywho, Blade Runner has got to be in my top 5 movies.

Missing Replicant...

I love the movie Bladerunner. I remember finding it on my dads Beta collection and watching it when I was 10yrs old and thinking to myself“ This was the best mover ever, why the hell have I not seen this yet?”. Probably not an appropriate movie for a 10 year old, but never the less it had a pretty big impact on my art and has left an echo that you can see in my work to this day. The female Replicants, Zhora and Priss were truly as Bryant (M. Emmet Walsh) put it the beauty and the beast.

So a couple of months ago my father was watching the movie and the scene where Bryant is explaining how many Replicants had escaped and come to earth, and he points out that there was a sixth Replicant that was mentioned but you never see in the film...I had never noticed this before!

I googled it and yeah apparently there was another female Replicant named Mary/Irmgard Batty who was in the original script and got cut due to Budget issues. But the scene had already been filmed and had been left alone with the mention of the 6th Replicant.

So this is my Nexus 6 version of the lost Replicant Mary.

Tacos Al Cabron

Sneaking this one in under the wire...here's my tribute to Danny Trejo. Not familiar with this film? It was a little known, low budget production in the 80's entitled: The Outdoorsman: Tacos Al Cabron. Great flick, where Trejo's character "Nacho" Guerrero teamed up with monster hunter supreme The Outdoorsman to hunt a bunch of chupacabras that had taken over a small Mexican town.

Yeah, so this is a bit self-serving, but my character in that story was based off of Danny Trejo, cause I love that actor. He always kicks ass. And since I'm going to be working on redrawing that story in the upcoming months, this seemed like a way to get me excited for it.
