Timberline Draw Blog Scavenger Hunt Denver Comic Con 2013

Timberline Draw Blog Scavenger Hunt

To celebrate Denver Comic Con, the Timberline Draw Blog is having a Scavenger Hunt! The Timberline Draw Blog is a group of Colorado artists who get together each week, and draw a new topic. The work is posted to the blog, timberlinedraw.blogspot.com, for everyone to enjoy. A bunch of the Timberline Draw Blog artists are going to be at DCC in Artist Alley, so why not visit us and participate in our little event!

Visit each of the participating Timberline Draw Blog artists in Artist Alley during Denver Comic Con, and get their FREE Timberline Draw Blog Trading Card. Collect all the cards (one from each participating artist), and show that set to any of the Timberline Draw Blog artists. They’ll take your information down, and you’ll be entered to win!

After the convention, we’ll do a drawing to find the winners, and post them on the Timberline Draw Blog the week after DCC. Winners will also be contacted directly via email to claim your prizes. Here’s what you can win:

Prizes-

1st Prize – Topic choice for 1 week of Timberline, Commissioned drawing by Robert Elrod (11x17 ink on illustration board)

2nd Prize – Topic choice for 1 week of Timberline, Commissioned drawing by Kevin Gentilcore (8.5x11 ink on illustration board)

3rd Prize – Topic choice for 1 week of Timberline

All artists have committed to posting a drawing during the weeks where it’s a winner’s choice! That’s a lot of great free artwork! And if you’re the Grand Prize winner, you’ll get an Robert Elrod or Kevin Gentilcore original! Plus, you get a cool set of trading cards out of the deal for just participating!

So make sure while you’re hanging down at Denver Comic Con (May 31st – June 2nd), you swing by Artist Alley and visit all your local Timberline Draw Blog artists. We’ll all have great artwork for sale, and look forward to meeting all of you.

There are a limited number of Timberline Draw Blog Trading Card sets to collect, so make sure you start getting your cards early!

Ack Ack Ack

I'm several weeks late with this one. Here's a scan (of the majority of the piece fitted together from 2 scanned sections). I'd started it during the week of the topic but got sidetracked, per usual. Hopefully it was worth the wait.

"Ack Ack Ack" ... acrylic gouache on 24"x12" illustration board by Robert Elrod.

THE LAW

This is only my second attempt at scratchboard and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed scratching it.

"Black Dagger"

My orc piece for the Timberline Draw Blog is entitled "Black Dagger". I did this with a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen and some Pitt artist pens on 8"x10" illustration board. Hope you enjoy it!

"Thirteen"

Yep. I'm late with this entry. Here's my tarot card art for last week's topic.

"Thirteen" ... ink on 8"x10" claybord by Robert Elrod. This was my first attempt at using claybord. The packaging said it was a great surface for ink drawing. It's a very slick surface and the ink does NOT react to it the same way that it does to paper, obviously. That being said, once I got rolling with it, I didn't feel too uncomfortable. I think it's a surface that I will probably use again. Perhaps next time I'll get one of their black claybords and trying doing it completely with an X-Acto blade (scratchboarding). I did a little scratching on this to see how I'd like doing that. Honestly, it was kinda fun. I need to get a different blade for it, however.

MARS ATTACKS...wait, I did this drawing how long ago?

Of course Kevin picks Mars Attacks the day after I post my art for this year's ComicFest...which just happens to be Mars Attacks. Well, I'll take it. And because I've already shown the full color version, here's the black & white:

Sorry I haven't had a chance to contribute the last few weeks...besides my day job kicking my tail, I've been working on a few things for the blog. One is the new header logo above, and part of which was this guy:

Next week, I hope to be back on the ball!

Cheers

Some of my many squids

Well, of course, being one of the steering members of the Squid Works, I've had my share of opportunities to draw sea creatures (albeit not necessarily "monsters"), so I'll try to find as many as I can and post them here:

This one was a part of a comic jam.

This is one that's been used for banners and all sorts of other stuff, including this ringer t-shirt.

Here it is again in color.

This is one I did for a t-shirt.

A gag strip I did for the Tickle Tape back in the day.

Sea Monster

"Sea Monster" ... colored pencil on 9"x12" toned paper by Robert Elrod.

Yeah, it was fun to draw but I couldn't think up a fun title for it so it's just "Sea Monster". Hope you enjoy it!

M U N S T E R l o v e

I know its been a long time since I've seen the show, but I do remember enjoying it. I must admit my knowledge of the show is limited as I haven't seen it in a while, so I just googled Munsters and found a pic I liked and drew it. I do remember thinking it was nice that Herman and Lily Munster always looked like they were a happy couple, so I guess that's why I picked the image. It's always nice when a pretty lady loves a big, dumb, Munster. :D

Curse of Anubis

"Curse of Anubis" ... digital by Robert Elrod.

My Saturday Morning Cartoon Favorite was always Jonny Quest. I fell in love with the show from my first exposure. I've always been a fan of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Jonny Quest combined a lot of those elements and made it fun. Here's my homage to one of my favorite episodes.

D O C o c k

Well here is my entry for the Spider Man pick. Doc Ock. So yeah I don’t know a whole hell of a lot about Spider Man, I just a basic knowledge about the main characters and villains. I do remember a long time ago in grade school I had a friend who drew a lot and he had this how to draw marvel book that was 11” x 17”, as it had actual comic boards at the end of the book that one could practice on. In fact I think it was set up so that you were supposed to finish a Spider man comic that they showed in it’s various stages of creation. The first five pages were fully done with ink, color, word bubbles. Then the next pages were just the pencils with the word bubbles, and finally you got to the blank pages where you were supposed to finish the story with your own art and such. I didn’t draw in the book as it wasn’t mine but I did read the Spider Man comic. It was about Spider Man and Mary Jane or some shit , and then he has to go fight Doc Ock, who was robbing a bank. I thought to myself “The dude has robot arms and looks like a crazy super villain, so why the fuck is he wasting his time robbing banks?” I don’t know I guess I just wanted him to do more sinister shit.

So here is my version of Doc Ock. I didn’t use a reference as I was too lazy to look up a pic on google. Figured I’d just shoot from the hip and do a drawing using the memory I had of him. I remember him having this stupid bowl hair cut so I don’t know if that is accurate still or not. Maybe they have hooked him up with a better hairdo in the contemporary Spider Man. Then I still had him robbing banks because I guess that is what he do :P And the martini was just for flavor.

Krampus

I find the story of Krampus very intriguing and entertaining. I hope this post will prompt you to investigate it for yourself. In the meantime, I wish you and yours a very happy and prosperous holiday season ... and may Krampus not deem it necessary to visit you!

Best wishes!
Robert

Abe

This isn't really a holiday card or anything. I just felt like getting my Mignola on, I recently got the latest BPRD omnibus (Plague of Frogs 4).

S E A S O N S g r e e t i n g s

I really liked what Patrick Hoover did with his post, so I figured I'd copy his idea and do a holiday card for my graphic novel LENZ. I did it in B&W with the grey tones because that's how I do the comic. Kind of funny to see a B&W holiday card as well. Anyhow I had fun with it, and I look forward to get back to doing pages for it in the new year!

Wampa

I chose to draw a Wampa this week. I've wanted to draw something from Star Wars for a while and this was a good excuse.

L A D Y F O O T

At first I when I saw this weeks topic I thought about doing the Sasquatch from the Capcom game Darkstalkers. Then I thought about how popular Felicia was from that game and wondered what could have been if they had taken the same concept that they did with Felicia, but did it with the Sasquatch character. More that anything I just wanted to make a gross anime/furry character to creep out Kevin Gentilcore.
