MAN-THING - Full Frontal
On behalf of the always excellent Matt Campbell, here is his contribution to the draw blog...a wonderfully colorful and veiny MAN-THING.
Twig and Berries...Guy.
Here's my take on the Man-Thing...and the phallic humor continues.
I know it's not as fancy as Kevin Gentilcore's version ;) , with all his grayscale and fancy halftone effects, but I think it turned out alright. Done on bristol with Pentel Pen Brush and micron pens. Maybe if I find the time and energy, I'll try to do what Kevin did with his and give it some depth and pop.
Man-Thing really brought out the best in my fellow Timberliners! Love it!
Cheers
Patrick
Mister-Thing
I am surprised this topic hasn't come up already. I was going to use this a way to try out the toning feature in Manga Studio but it frustrated me to know end so I just did the toning in Photoshop.
I could draw Man-Thing all day. Once you get his anatomy right it is just a matter of playing around and going crazy with the details.
Also, everybody is rocking it this week. I should have know Giant Size Man-Thing would be a hit with this crowd.

Again I wasn't too knowledgeable about this weeks topic. With a little internet research I learned Ellen Brandt was mainly responsible for Ted Sallis becoming Man Thing. From what I read she betrays him, and when Ted becomes Man Thing he burns her face with a corrosive acid that he secretes.

MAN-THING
What else is there to say?
Didja know Man-Thing pre-dates Swamp Thing by a month or two? God bless Wikipedia.
Nemo's Nautilus
I love the Disney 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea film and most especially the art/production design.
Here's the lineart of the Nautilus ruthlessly defending Volcania. I'm coloring it in vector, so it might be even cooler!

Sea Monstrosity...
So this is a character I drew in the sketchbook I was giving away for my Halloween contest. I made some headway on my new comic this week and I wanted to start fleshing out some of the characters that might be in it. This guy was on my list.
Still trying some new stuff. Trying the zip-a-tone, halftone pattern on this. Think I need to work on the settings some but so far I like the effect.
Anywho...Sea Monster!

Some of my many squids
Well, of course, being one of the steering members of the Squid Works, I've had my share of opportunities to draw sea creatures (albeit not necessarily "monsters"), so I'll try to find as many as I can and post them here:
This one was a part of a comic jam.
This is one that's been used for banners and all sorts of other stuff, including this ringer t-shirt.
Here it is again in color.
This is one I did for a t-shirt.
A gag strip I did for the Tickle Tape back in the day.
Munsters Munsters
I completely underestimated the amount of time this woud take lol. Musters topic? I will draw them all! I saw something similar to this style on Facebook but I can't find the post now. Well the panel layout at least. I am still trying some new color techniques that I want to use for our new comic and I think I am pretty close now between this and the Mojo Jojo piece from last week.
Anywho...The Munsters. I have to be honest here, I haven't watched The Munsters in years. I loved it when I was a kid, they used to play it on Nick At Night or something, with the Addams Family (which I prefer) but I love the family dynamic. Great characters.

Sea Monster
"Sea Monster" ... colored pencil on 9"x12" toned paper by Robert Elrod.
Yeah, it was fun to draw but I couldn't think up a fun title for it so it's just "Sea Monster". Hope you enjoy it!

M U N S T E R l o v e
I know its been a long time since I've seen the show, but I do remember enjoying it. I must admit my knowledge of the show is limited as I haven't seen it in a while, so I just googled Munsters and found a pic I liked and drew it. I do remember thinking it was nice that Herman and Lily Munster always looked like they were a happy couple, so I guess that's why I picked the image. It's always nice when a pretty lady loves a big, dumb, Munster. :D

Kidd Video
My Saturday Morning Cartoons entry - better late than never, right? I went with Kidd Video - remember that? 80s cartoon, MTV inspired? No? ...Yeah, this is probably the dorkiest thing I've ever drawn. Totally shoulda' gone with Thundarr. Sigh.

Fromage Homage
So I only remember watching this show on Saturday nights, but it's Hanna-Barbara if only in name. And I love this show and especially this episode, so this is what you get. Just a quick marker sketch.
Underdog Redesign
The show my mom tells me I enjoyed most was Underdog. I went back to the original designs and realized how lame underdog looked, with that baggy shirt and misshapen head. Here's a new one, and a bonus Simon bar Sinister sketch.
I blame the hip hop
Man I really dug this weeks topic! I was just youtube surfing all of the old school cartoon intros and remembering so many of those shows I used to watch and forgot about. It brought me to the realization that I was completely obsessed with cartoons as a kid....well lets be honest I'm still obsessed with them now! I guess what I mean is that you don’t really know how deep it was until you actually look back on it. Anyhow I couldn't really decide on a specific show or a favorite because there were so many classic shows to choose from, so I ended up doing a painting of JEM as I thought it would be funny. XD

8 1/4" X 11 1/4" Watercolor on Arches Hotpress 140lbs paper
I also figured I share this experiment. I’m still playing around with the last sheets of the Arches 140lbs Hot Press that I have. That’s how I paint, I did both the JEM painting and this on a half sheet of paper I stretch and then cut them off of the board. There are some things I’m starting to like about working on the Hotpress, but I think for the most part I will always prefer watercolor painting on cold press. Still I like how this one came out so I think I will try to do some more works like it.

Curse of Anubis
"Curse of Anubis" ... digital by Robert Elrod.
My Saturday Morning Cartoon Favorite was always Jonny Quest. I fell in love with the show from my first exposure. I've always been a fan of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Jonny Quest combined a lot of those elements and made it fun. Here's my homage to one of my favorite episodes.

Mojo Rising
I am starting production on a couple new comics and I have been wanting to try some new color schemes and styles for these new books so from now on until I am satisfied I am going to use Timberline as a testing ground.
The first comic that is up is Never Make a Monster and I really want to use a limited color scheme so I tried that out here. I am not sure how successful this is but I like the idea of the slight shading on the figure, think I may have to play with it more.
Anywho, there were a million characters I could have drawn for this but when my lovely girlfriend suggested Mojo Jojo I decided that was the one. I couldn't pass up the chance to draw a monkey in a cape.
